The History Behind Brouwerij De Sleutels in Bruges

The History Behind Brouwerij De Sleutels in Bruges

When you stay at Brouwerij De Sleutels, you’re not just booking a room—you’re stepping into centuries of history.

A Brewery Born in the 15th Century

The story of Brouwerij De Sleutels begins in 1441, when it was first mentioned as “In de Slotel”, one of the 54 breweries listed in medieval Bruges. At that time, Bruges was a thriving center of trade and culture, and beer played a major role in everyday life.

By 1673, the brewery had grown significantly and was known as “De Sloter.” It became one of the largest in the city, producing traditional brews that likely flowed into local taverns and homes for generations.

A Bridge Named After the Brewery

The Sleutelbrug (Key Bridge) still stands proudly just outside our building. Built in the 14th century, this charming three-arched bridge spans the Speelmansrei canal and connects Beenhouwersstraat, Speelmansrei, and Wulfhagestraat. Its name honors the historic brewery it neighbored—ours.

In 2002, the bridge became a protected monument, a symbol of Bruges’ deep respect for its past. As you walk across it today, you’re walking in the footsteps of hundreds of years of history.

From Brewery to Bed & Breakfast

While beer is no longer brewed here, the spirit of the past lives on. Our building has been lovingly restored to keep its historic charm while offering modern comfort. Exposed beams, vintage touches, and warm tones create a setting that feels both timeless and welcoming.

Staying with us means becoming part of a living legacy—where history, hospitality, and heart come together in the center of Bruges.
